The September issue of Gramophone is now on sale! Inside we celebrate a century of recordings by the Berlin Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon, a partnership which began with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony under Arthur Nikisch and continued through the years with some of the greatest collaborations between conductor and orchestra - Furtwängler, Karajan and Abbado to name just three. Richard Osborne investigates.

Also this issue: we reveal the top three recordings shortlisted in each category for the Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2013 before the category winners are revealed on August 27; Christian Curnyn and the Early Opera Company record Handel's Serse in our Session Report; 90-year-old pianist Menahem Pressler is the focus of the Musician's Diary; pianist Martha Argerich is this month's Icon; conductor John Axelrod examines Brahms's Fourth Symphony in The Musician and the Score; Sarah Kirkup asks can ballet music succeed in the concert hall; Plácido Domingo talks to Jeremy Nicholas about his debut baritone CD; and our Season Preview 2013-14 looks at the best live classical music and opera coming up next season around the world.

Plus, as always, the month's new classical music releases are reviewed by our expert critics - including our Recording of the Month, Handel's Timotheus, oder Die Gewalt der Musik featuring soprano Roberta Invernizzi, tenor Werner Güra, bass Gerald Finley and Concentus Musicus Wien under Nikolaus Harnoncourt on Sony Classical.
